It seems like most bookstores have been
filled with books trying to explain the concept of Hygge.
Wanting to know what the fuss was about I bought
The Little Book of Hygge, The Danish Way to Live Well by Meik Wiking.
Throughout the whole book the author tries
to explain the meaning of Hygge as there is no direct translation in to any
other language.
What I took from the book is that Hygge is something
most people strive to achieve and its to find happiness in the little things we
do everyday. Hygge can be curling up in your favourites spot reading a book with
a cosy blanket after a long day at work. Hygge can be an afternoon spent with a
friend watching a film. Hygge can be anything that makes you feel cosy, relaxed
and safe.
It was an interesting read but what I most
liked about the book is a point that the author made about the way introverts
and extroverts socialise.
It’s a common misconception that introverts
aren’t sociable. Humans are sociable beings by nature but the way each person
socialises isn’t always the same.
The book talks about how introverts choose
to socialise and spend their time with loved ones and family in a cosy/familiar
environment. Introverts can sometimes feel drained by too many external stimuli,
and we should learn to accept that that is alright.
I do consider myself an introvert and due
to the way I choose to spent my time I know people have criticised me and
called antisocial in the past. But it isn’t true, I don’t spend my days alone.
I do enjoy having time to myself but I know I wouldn’t be able to go more than
a day without seeing or speaking to someone. I might not have a large group of
friends but I do know that I can count on and be myself with the few that I
have, and for me that is much more important.
So let’s try to stop labelling people and just
concentrate in making the most out of the time we have, let´s try to find the
happiness in the little things we do each day, let´s try to be a bit more Hygge
