Is double cleansing really necessary?

In a world of a hundred steps skincare routine is double cleansing really necessary or is it another hype aimed at increasing consumerism?

best cleanser

There is really no right or wrong answer to this, but in my opinion it really depends on your lifestyle. If like me, you like to apply a full face of makeup every morning a simple cleanse at night wont get rid of all the makeup and build up of the day. That’s when double cleansing is useful, as with your first cleanse you are removing the bulk of your makeup and with your second cleanse you are actually cleansing your skin.

There are many different cleansers which work wonders for your initial cleanse.

These seem to be the most popular:

Cleansing wipes: They are one of the most convenient but are also my least favourite. Whilst cleansing wipes are quick and easy to use they can also be quite harsh on your skin and can cause premature signs of ageing as you are dragging the wipe along your skin. It is quite rare for me to use cleansing wipes, I just don’t think they are that effective at removing makeup but I know some people can’t live without them.

Micellar water: By far my most used first cleanser ever. I love how convenient, effective and gentle it is. Micellar water is often recommended for dry or sensitive skin as it gently removes makeup without stripping the skin. My favourite micellar water by far is sensibiomicellar water by Bioderma, I have gone through many bottles of this stuff and will continue to repurchase. In my opinion it’s the best micellar water in the market.

Cleansing balms: cleansing balms as the name would suggest have a balmy texture and have a thicker consistency. You simply scoop up the product and gently massage it onto the skin, you will see how your makeup melts. It works wonders for quickly removing heavy makeup.
Cleansing balms are normally recommended for people with dry skin, I have oily skin and still enjoy using balms, I just make sure to second cleanse with a different cleanser.
If you have sensitive skin, choose your cleansing balm wisely as some do tend to sting. My favourite one is the EmmaHardie Moringa Cleansing Balm as it is gentle on the skin and very effective at removing makeup.

Cleansing Oils: This is a fairly resent discovery for me and have only really tried the Kiehl´s Midnight Recovery Cleansing oil but they all tend to work the same. You spread the oil evenly around your face in circular motions and the makeup will begin to lift from the skin and melt. It works similar to a cleansing balm, but whilst you remove the cleansing balm with a muslin cloth, the oil should be rinsed with water.
Don’t be afraid to use a cleansing oil if you have oily skin, I have never suffered from breakouts or clogged pores just by using cleansing oils but I do understand that every skin type is different and reacts differently.

  1. To be honest I love cleansing wipes cause they're so convenient! I love my micellar water too. I'm curious about cleansing oils, I'll look into them. Great post xx

  2. Normally I just use micellar water to take my makeup off but all these products sound amazing and are probably a bit better than that! I'll have to give them a try. X

  3. I agree, it's everyone's preference. Honestly I always try to multiply cleanse, because the smog and dust in the cities are just something horrible. First I use micellar water, then face soap from lush and finish with cleansing gel. After that I feel like my skin is actually clean. :)

  6. It's a necessary step for me! I loved reading this post, because I don't think some people realize the difference. HaHaHa Everything you said was so true. I use Cliniques Cleansing Balm. It works the best for me. Plus I have DRY SKIN! So it helps. I have makeup wipes but I barely use them on my face anymore and only when I swatch makeup.

  7. I always double cleanse because I always notice I still have residue left after this first time around. I use a cleaning oil but have been dying to use the Clinique Cleaning Balm. On my list of purchases

  9. Wow. I think it depends on one's skin.
I try to live sustainably and as a year round petsitter can only travel with what I can fit in a backpack - leading me to choose just one face cleanser - Derma E. It's all I need to keep my skin feeling clean and clear. I will use an exfoiliant once a week. Usually my petsits have one, so I just squirt a little onto my hands and rub it in.

  10. The only time I use cleansing wipes is if I was wearing makeup. Normally when I wash my face I tend to just use a cleanser and a cream. :) This was a great post though. I loved your take on this. http://www.bauchlefashion.com/2017/05/cannes-hottest-moments.html

  15. I have heard so much about double cleansing and I think you're right, it does depend on your lifestyle. I only cleanse once if I am in the house all day, but work days I usually cleanse twice as I love that clean feeling! I would love to try the Emma Hardy cleansing balm as I have heard so many good things about it, but I use the Alpha H triple action cleanser and it is fantastic for my acne prone skin. xx

  16. I have found a huge benefit from double cleansing but as you say, on days where I don't leave the house or wear makeup I skip it. I think it's only useful when used at the right time. I love Emma Hardy too, it's my all time favourite cleanser which I've repurchased for years.

  18. This is such a tough one for me.

I know double cleansing is necessary, like you say because of layers of product daily, even sparingly. But I'm so lazy most of the time.

I use a micellar water first, and then the Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel. Balms are my favourite for a thorough cleanse. But I've realised lately that I'm more likely to double cleanse if the step after Oskia is an oil.

  19. I rarely 'cleanse' my skin, i try and keep it simple with warm water and a flannel. My skin is super sensitive and anything else just makes it flare up!

  20. I think balms are probably my favourite, but I totally agree with you about wipes. While I get that some people would use them in place of micellar water just to get the initial bulk of their makeup off before cleansing properly, you get so many more uses out of a bottle of micellar water, and you don't have to be overly careful about which one you buy like you would have to be with wipes, so they're just not for me.
