Trying out The Ordinary

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%

I’m sure most of you have already heard about the brand The Ordinary, for those of you that haven’t let me just summarise their philosophy. They aim to offer affordable skincare by not investing on new technology or packaging allowing them to offer the best skincare without the heavy price tag.
They don’t offer a “fantastic, rejuvenating, next generation peel”, they offer Lactic Acid and let you know what are the proven benefits.

If you don’t know how certain skincare ingredients work you might find it all a bit confusing, but their website explains in a simple manner what ingredients their products contain, what are the known benefits and how the product should be used.

I think this is a great concept, not only because it helps us save money but it also makes you aware of what you are putting in your face, therefore you can better judge what ingredients work best for your skin.

To try out their skincare I decided to buy the Advanced Retinoid 2% (£8.00) and the Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%.(£5.50)

advanced retinoid 2%

The Advanced Retinoid 2% seems to be a crowd pleaser. Retinoid fights the early signs of ageing without irritating the skin. Some type of retinoids are also known to be good at preventing acne, but The Ordinary clearly states that this product doesn’t combat acne. In fact the website states that acne-prone skin may experience a temporary increase in acne during the first few weeks of using any form of retinoid. I personally haven’t experienced any breakouts or acne whilst using this products, but different skin types react differently.
The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% has a lovely and milky white texture that absorbs instantly on the skin. The scent isn’t the best but it doesn’t really bother me. As for immediate effects, the texture of my skin did feel smoother with a subtle glow. As for the long-term age-rewinding benefits, I don’t think I have been using it long enough to see any visible results.

The Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2% also seems to be a popular choice. The main reason why I decided to try this product out is because I always wanted to but the Sunday Riley Good genes but I feel that too expensive. Both products contain Lactic Acid so I though it would be a great dupe to try out.
Lactic Acid is an alpha hydroxyl acid that exfoliates the skin, the formula also contains Tasmanian pepperberry known to reduce signs of inflammation and sensitivity that is often associated with exfoliation. I ended up choosing the mildest option but there is also a 10% Lactic Acid if you think your skin would be able to take it. I have felt my skin slightly smoother the next day and haven’t experienced any irritation or redness, I don’t think I would recommend this product if you have very sensitive skin, but it’s a great exfoliator and the price is unbeatable.

Over all I was impressed with these two products and I will continue to test out the rest of their range.

Have you tried out The Ordinary Skicare? Let me know what you think!

  3. I have the 10% lactic acid and I find it really gentle still - although my skin is pretty used to acids. I've loved pretty much every The Ordinary product I've tried so far!

    1. I don't really use acids thats why I went for the 5% lactic acid, but as soon as I finish my bottle I might try the 10% one.

  7. I've just recently picked up a few things from The Ordinary - the 7% Glycolic Solution or whatever it's called to use as an exfoliating toner, the salicylic acid spot treatment and their 12% Ascorbyl Glucoside Vit C serum and so far I'm loving all of them. I've thought about picking up the two you've got as well but I've got a half size each of Sunday Riley's Luna & Good Genes because they came in a pack together so I'm not going to buy new products until I'm nearing the end of those two.

  10. I wanted to try the Lactic Acid but they were all sold out. However, I've using the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution and the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 and I love them!
