I used to struggle a lot with breakouts in
the past. I was really self-conscious and hated my skin. I tried every product under
the sun and nothing seemed to do the trick. My skincare routine went from one
step to a hundred steps, and my skin was still bad.
Every skin is different and what works for
me might not work for you, but if you are struggling with your skin its worth
following these simple 3 steps.
Keep your skincare to a minimum. You don’t need 40 steps in your night time routine, your skin doesn’t
need all those chemicals and you are just going to irritate your skin.
I only use 3 products (cleanser, oil,
treatment) and that’s all I need.
The best cleanser for problematic skin that
I have tried, and believe me, I have tried them all is La Roche-Possay Effaclar Cleansing Gel.
This product is the best for two reasons: it´s incredibly gentle and it doesn’t
leave your face stripped of all moisture. Cleansers for oily or acne prone skin
tend to me very harsh. These type of cleansers will make your skin feel dry
which will lead to an increase of oil product, and will contribute to the development
of spots and acne. The bottle pictured is a travel size, I tend to use the 400ml
bottle which has very handy pump.
Keep your skin hydrated. After cleansing forget about toners, specially ones marketed for
oily or acne prone skin, again that will only make your skin feel drier,
irritated a react by producing more sebum. Just apply a light moisturiser or face
oil. I prefer oils, I know it sounds weird but trust me it’s the best thing for
your skin. Oils sink in quicker and are much lighter than moisturisers. My
favourite day time oils are the Nude Progenius
Rescue Oil and the Sarah
Chapman Morning Facial. At night I tend to use either the Kielh´s
Midninght Recovery Oil or the Sarah
Chapman Overnight Facial. I have reviewed all these oils on my blog if you
want to check them out.
Targeted treatment. It is also important to use a product to treat spots and acne. I
love using Tea Tree Oil in the morning. This oil has antibacterial properties
and it will prevent the spot getting worse and the surrounding area getting
affected. At night my favourite product to use is the Mario Badescu
Drying Lotion, this product is stronger but its amazing. It contains Calamine
and Salicylic Acid so it helps reduce the spot by
drying it out. Spots are considerably smaller and less noticeable the next day
and usually gone within 3 to 4 days.
I prefer oils too, so much more hydrating on the skin! x
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting! I don't tend to suffer with breakouts very often, *touch wood* as I have really dry skin, but I'll have to keep these in mind for when I do!xx

I totally agree that most products marketed towards oily skin can be really stripping and drying and terrible for your skin. It’s really unethical for companies to create and sell products like this, and I really can’t imagine that if they’ve done a significant amount of research into the effects of different ingredients that they actually believe they’ve created a good product – so they really need to just do away with terrible drying products that only irritate the skin more. I’ve not tried that one from LRP but I do really like their Toleriane cleanser because it’s a lovely simple cream cleanser and I tend to favour creams over gels as a second cleanse at night just for personal preference. And I tried one of the Mario Badescu spot treatments a while back and found it really effective, but I do prefer my Salicylic Acid from The Ordinary these days because it works just fine for me and it’s super affordable and not too drying. But I totally agree that a good spot treatment is essential if you get pimples.

So happy to hear you've found skincare products that work well with your skin! I used to experience terrible breakouts too, though managed to kick most of them out of my life this year with the right products, and also eating healthier! Hope you're having a wonderful week so far! :)

Totally agree with you on the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. I used to have so much trouble finding a product that would work to heal my spots and I went from using natural products that were too gentle to products like Benzoyl Peroxide (I think that's what it was called) and that was WAY too harsh...plus it also bleached my towels... :/
ReplyDeleteDrying Lotion is perfect though, that's something I'm probably always going to repurchase :)
